An American Girl in Washington

2 years to 30

Posted in All about moi by AGinDC on 21 October 2011

Yesterday was my birthday and it was quiet and low-key and wonderful just as I wanted it. I started the morning with coffee at Tynan and a meet-up with a girl at my law school who I actually helped recruit! She’s interested in following a “non-traditional” path so, of course, she was directed to me. It was so nice talking to someone from Mich and especially someone as smart and adorbs as this girl.

Then I had lunch at Vapiano (did you know there’s another Vapiano that’s not the one in Chinatown? Yeah, me either) with my two new LilyPad interns. These girls could not be more adorable, although they’re both very cute blondes with Gossip Girl names so I’m already mixing them up. I’ll have to work on that. They’re both seniors at GWU, want to go into Fashion Marketing and have amazing experience working for Vogue, Oscar de la Renta in Paris, and more. How lucky am I to have run into these girls in DC of all places? Love it.

After lunch I went home and got myself looking halfway presentable and then headed off to the White House again. This was for another panel on the American Jobs Act and although the President didn’t join us this time, it was great because we had an hour with two of my favorite Michigan Law grads: Valerie Jarrett and Melody Barnes. They both looked great, Valerie in particular looked so much more glamorous and rested then she has in a while. I was glad to see that she must have been treating herself to some well-deserved spa time. I would also kill to know who made her suit. Going to the WH yesterday was actually a surprise. @KeziaMW emailed me while I was drinking oolong and said “DO YOU WANT TO GO TO THE WHITE HOUSE TODAY? EMAIL BACK IN FIVE MINUTES!!”. I emailed back in 30 minutes but luckily it wasn’t too late. Talk about a birthday surprise!

Post-White House I had drinks with Ferr and DeanBax, who also played Happy Birthday to me on his oboe! It was a perfectly low-key and comfortable night. The best thing about my birthday was that they were all things that I’ve done before and will do again and that when I woke up the first thing I wanted to do was work and go about my day as usual. I think that’s a pretty good sign that I’m living the life I want to live.

Other things that are awesome? My roommate gave me yummy cupcakes from Sticky Fingers bakery. @danieldzn and @designbyjihee sent my gorgeous flowers. And my 2-year-old niece very deliberately signed my birthday card in neon green scribbles.

2 years to 30! What am I going to do with it?

A working weekend

Posted in Weekend in Washington by AGinDC on 17 October 2011

This was my favorite kind of weekend, I spent most of it watching the Golden Girls and working. In fact, after a meeting at the W on Friday until the ReadySetDC FashionDistrict shop and reception on Sunday night, I sat at my desk, in my PJs, with only Captain Picard and Dorothy Zbornak for company. It was wonderful.

I was also super proud of myself, I spent the weekend learning Adobe InDesign and made a super kick-ass digital mood board, complete with audio and video links. It was far from perfect, as @danieldzn kindly pointed out, but it’s the best I could do after several days of slaving over it and I think it looks pretty awesome considering that I only started working on it on Friday. Thanks Adobe for the free trial!

Other awesome things this weekend? I met Artistic Aya! Woohoo! How excited was I? I’ve been crazy about her designs since I first moved here! She was ridiculously adorable and super sweet and now that I’ve met her I can continue stalking her trunk shows and twitter feed without feeling bad. Which reminds me, go to her trunk show at the Chevy Chase in Bloomie’s on November 10-11! She has a really cute new collection that isn’t online yet!

That’s all for now. The lack of activity this weekend has rendered me speechless.

San Francisco! + also, more

Posted in All about moi by AGinDC on 14 October 2011

I know, I know. I just get so busy and I completely forget to write. But that’s no excuse. Sigh.

So, what’s been happening? Well, I just got back from San Francisco! Hurrah! It was wonderful. I reunited with a lot of my friends from undergrad as we all came out to celebrate a wedding. It was a very, very, very long three-day Hindu wedding in which we had to sit through a twelve-hour and three location ceremony that no one could really translate because even the bride and groom didn’t know what was going on. But the bride was gorgeous and the fam was happy and she and the groom planned a second, nine minute (I timed it) outdoor ceremony on a cliff overlooking mountains and a river in which she wore a hot pink sari. The first wedding may have been for the parents but the second wedding was for the bride and groom and everyone who likes an open bar and it was faabuolous. In between I threw them a bachelor/bachelorette party at Bubble Lounge which was unfreakingbelieveable. First of all, champagne lounge? Yes please. There’s one in New York and one in SF so I want to know when we’re getting on in DC. Second, dance floor in the basement? Hells yeah. After the stress of the first wedding and the anticipation of the second, the bride and groom were ready to party and after several magnums of champagne (two of which we brought from the Chandon vineyard in Napa and consumed in the hotel before we left) they danced til 3. In fact, they danced so long that the bride didn’t have time to write her vows and had to make something up on the spot! But it was adorbs and everyone loved it.

More importantly, I went to Napa for the first time! It was like Mecca, I have never been so happy. I’ve been to a lot of vineyards all over the world but I have always always always wanted to go to Napa. I only got to go to two vineyards but it was enough to have me already planning my next vacation. Forget the islands, from now on all of my time off will be spent among the glorious vines of Northern California. And then Oregon. And then Spain. And then back to France. And everywhere else. I pretty much decided that I’m going to be doing vineyard vacays for the rest of my life. I just cannot describe how happy they make me. I mean, I’ve been to Napa. I can die now. Oh wait, I can’t, I have to go back.

Other things? I have my first consulting client for LilyPad! Woohoo! Things are going absolutely swimmingly on the business front. I even have two faaabulous interns that I will be writing about later. Woohoo!

Also, things are getting busy with the NAACP. Big announcement coming soon. And Capital Cause is as Capital and Causey as ever. We have our big year end gala coming up, November 4th. Save the Date!

Other than that it seems that my short hiatus from the three meetings and two happy hours a night schedule is over. I’m jam-packed yet again but after the September break I actually feel refreshed and ready to go again. I was exhausted at the end of CBC but taking that last week off and going to SF (Napa! NAPA!) totally recharged my batteries and got me ready to get back on the horse. If I can keep this up until the snow starts I’ll be ready to lock myself in and hibernate for the rest of the season.

Oh, fav new restaurant? Graffiato. I’m in love and going again for lunch today. Prosecco on tap? Duh. Why doesn’t everyone do that? Plus, the tasting menu means I can eat delicious food without going broke and without getting fat. Love it. Other new favs? There’s an Anthropologie downtown now! A J. Crew can’t be far behind! pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease. My big goal for the weekend is to try the new ShopHouse in Dupont Circle. Reviews to come.

That’s the end!
