An American Girl in Washington

Memorial Day Weekend

Posted in Just another day in DC, Politics- as I see it by AGinDC on 1 June 2011

First of all, hello humidity!  It’s nice to see you again.  It’s been a while.  I didn’t miss you.  Take it personally.

Second, last weekend I discovered something else that I really really like about the District.  It’s super close to the water.  Whether you’re looking for a beach, bay, or river, there’s one close enough to spend the day at and still get your delivery Thai food for dinner.  On Friday I went to Queenstown, MD with some friends to spend the day bbqing, hanging with the peeps (a bunch of Coast Guard families, as usual I was the only single person there except this dude who looks like Hugh Grant’s doppelgänger.  Awesome.  I love being the only black and only single person at a party.) and boating out on the River Wye.  It was actually a lot of fun, and it was so nice being out on a boat (one of my fav things in the world) and spending some time in the wilderness.  Especially because that time was limited.  And there was lots of OFF.

On Sunday and Monday I stayed home and finally organized all of my stuff from the Michigan trip (my room is beautiful now) and got a lot of work done.  Plus, my new roommate moved in, which is exciting.  I also had brunch at The Heights on Sunday.  I really like that restaurant and go all of the time (in fact, I had been on Friday night) and usually the service is fantastic.  This time, however, one of the waiters threw a bit of a fit and behaved really appallingly.  To the restaurant’s credit though, I called and complained and they gave me a $50 gift card!  I thought that was awesome and totally made up for this one waiters male pms moment, so I’ll keep going there.

Third, yesterday I discovered something that I really hate about the District.  The local government is just like Detroit’s, which I just left in disgust.  $270,000 a year for councilmen?  Really?  How tone-deaf can you be?  And how arrogant?  I can’t believe people thought this prick would be better than Fenty.  But you know what, you get who you vote for, and DC did this to themselves.  Or, at least, 3/4 of DC, since it’s pretty obvious that no one in NW voted for Gray.  Ugh, I’m so disgusted.  His administration has been plagued with nothing but the basest and most obvious scandals since the day before he was sworn in.  And has he done a damned thing for the city yet?  No, because a staged pathetic fake arrest does not count.  I hate that DC has home rule but with idiots like this running the city, I would be terrified if we did.

Fourth, I love long weekends and short weeks.  It’s already Wednesday!
