An American Girl in Washington

A new town, a new life, a new bra.

I don’t believe in hellos.

I mean, of course, I say “hello” all of the time.  One has to.  But rather than stilted introductions, handshakes and perfunctory greetings I prefer just fitting in, getting to know a new person, or city, intimately and immediately and moving on.  This is probably a reflection of my army brat upbringing.  There’s not time for getting-to-know-yous when you’re only around for one school year.  With that in mind, I decided to jump into my new-but-familiar city with both hands, or rather, boobs.  I scheduled a bra fitting for my very first day.

After browsing the recommendations of some of my favourite lingerie blogs, I decided to try Coup de Foudre.  CdF won for two reasons: 1- they had an online scheduling feature and 2- they’re only a trip and a jump from the cozy hotel where I am happily ensconced until I find more appropriate housing, the JW Marriott on Penn Ave.  More on the hotel later.

I know this is a bad picture but I'm short!!

Coup de Foudre is an adorable little lingerie boutique.  In its one room it features the best in French designers (except, sadly, Agent Provocateur, but I can’t afford them anyways).  I knew I would love it immediately because the walls were filled with lacy delights, the women were speaking French and the far wall featured a comfy settee where JBJ, my gay bf, could ignore the girly accoutrements and flip through the pile of Capital Files.

I told the adorable French grandmother (who I immediately began to call grandmere in my head) that I wanted a fitting because the girls were feeling a little bigger (they’re not! thank God) and perhaps a new bra or two that were sexy and comfy but not crazy expensive.  Oui, Oui. We will find it she said and she ushered me to the changing room in the back.  After the first of many fondlings, she ran off and proceeded to bring me a parade of bras with such delightful French names as Chantelle, Simone Perele, and Le Mystere.  Sigh.  Everything sounds better in French, especially lingerie.

The first bra fit like a dream and grandmere fondled me as she explained exactly what to look for in a perfectly fitting bra.  Band fits snug but not too tight on the first link.  Cups do not overfloweth.  No gaps in the middle. Straps doing little to none of the work.  I nodded, she left and brought me another.  This one fit fabulously but looked a little like Madonna circa 1992.  Ambitious I am, Blonde, I am not.  Moving on.  After the next bra, grandmere exclaimed These all fit so well, you could be a bra model! Yeah, except for the part where I’m not skinny or tall and no one has ever called me The Body. But thanks.  Sadly, the fantastic fit didn’t outweigh the fact that it looked a little like a gingham picnic table wrapped around a cantaloupe.  Next.  Across the changing room door came a lacy, sugary, sexy confection of Francophone lingerie goodness.  I was almost giddy as I examined the perfect black lace detailing over the pale pink lining, the beautiful grosgrain bow sewn into the bridge between the girls (where there was NO GAP!) and the perfect white stitching across the black straps that led to a perfectly constructed band.  Sigh.  It was love at first sight, and luckily it fit me perfectly and, being Chantelle, was only $68.  Win!

Spurred by the joy of my first big find I continued to try bra after bra.  The next one was Marie Jo and was gorgeous except for the annoying flowers all across the straps that were clearly not coming home with me.  After that I was privy to a transparent mesh and lace bra that had the girls poking out like a fembot in training.  When grandmere wasn’t in the room I swished around from side to side to see if bullets would come flying out.  They didn’t.  But they could have.

After a few more bras, most of which were good but not perfect or were great but not “the one”, a nude Simone Perele with little to no design except for a bow here and a swish of stitching there ended the trip.  It fit perfectly, it was absolutely beautiful and, at $80, it was a little more than I was planning to spend buuuuttt, I’m not really very responsible anyways.

Content with my decisions, both of which were fervently supported by grandmere, I checked out, grabbed JBJ, and happily waved goodbye.  JBJ had found a fabulous pic of ValJar and Desiree R in one of the Capital Files and the ladies even let us take the mag!  I will definitely be back once a month to add a new confection to my collection.

Happy with my new bras and so happy to meet you!

Very fun! I myself have patronized The Full Cup, where fondling also happened, but to a good cause. A very beautiful lacy black number! Yay!
